6/20 Tigers ranked No. 12 in state in new Texas Football
By BRENT BOWDEN/Daily Sun Staff
When the 42nd edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football was released Monday, few around the Golden Circle were surprised of its contents concerning the 2001 campaign for the Tigers. With 11 starters returning from a team that went to the Division I state quarterfinals, the publication placed the team at the No. 12 spot on its pre-season 4A list. In addition to appearing in the magazine's Top 25, the Tigers have also been forecasted to win District 15-4A ahead of Terrell and Chapel Hill.
"That's surely an honor," Tiger head coach Jeff Berry said of the predictions. "But I don't put a lot of stock in those magazines. It matters what you do on the field during the season."
In addition to the Tigers, Texas Football also has defending Division II state champion Ennis (2), Denton Ryan (3), who knocked the Tigers out of the playoffs last season, and 2000 Division I regional finalist Greenville (13) in its Top 25 list of 4A teams. Lufkin, who the Tigers will face this season on the road, were awarded the top spot in the 5A rankings.
"We can be both of those (No. 12 and 15-4A winner)," Berry said. "But we'd like to be No. 1."
Area schools from Region 16-2A Hubbard and Blooming Grove were picked to finish third and fifth, respectively. Kerens is projected to finish in the middle of the 20-2A pack at fifth.
Although Itasca suffered large losses from its area finalist 2000 squad, Texas Football places it in the top spot in Region 21-A ahead of area Frost at second, Mildred third, Rice fourth and Dawson at sixth. Wortham shows up in the third spot in the Region 23-A pre-season poll.
As for SWJCFC predictions, Texas Football only looks for Navarro and Tyler to lead the pack this season. The magazine's projections for the conference say to look for former Tigers receiver Da'Ray Sims and tight end Pete Putnam to play lead roles in the Bulldogs' fierce passing attack.
As of Tuesday, the issue was not available in Corsicana.
